High School

When I was in high school I took Cosmetology. It was a blast to say the least. I loved my teacher and really bonded with a few of the girls that went through the process with me. If you are an ongoing Movin' Mom reader then you would know that school was not my forte'. Hence the reason I opted for the 3 hour class of learning how to cut, perm, tease, and up do a serious hairstyle. We learned facials, manicure, pedicures....It went on and on. Initially I took the class to get out of any academic classes that may be required. Little did I know that Theory would be a part of cosmetology. I did come to love the class and found myself wanting to learn more and more everyday. But once a year we would travel for competition. We would stay at a hotel and I have many great memories of that time.

In the year 2000, my father passed away and as I have mentioned before he was an artist, (not for a living) but he enjoyed it quite a bit. I also have acquired the love of art but have to say I did not appreciate my fathers ability until he was gone. Now of course when I come across something he has drawn I tend to see it through different eyes. But isn't that always the case...they say an artists work is always worth more once their gone. I do not care where we were my father would find a reason to draw. In a restaurant, napkins galore, at home on the newspaper, paper towels, anywhere. My boys could sit and watch him for hours. they would scribble something and then he would magically transform it to an elephant, a person or whatever he could figure out.

While going through some old boxes in the garage I found my "high school" box. It had my homecoming mum, which was beautiful but I could not possibly have appreciated that in high school the way I do now that I have recently purchased a $30. corsage for my sons date to a high school dance. It was so tiny, I can not imagine the cost of my mum. And sadly enough I broke up with that guy right after homecoming. ANYWAY...something else I came across was my booklet from that cosmetology competition I was so surprised that my dad had done the art work for it. Now my stories are coming together for you. I wasn't rambling I swear. I did win first place along with some other friends...we were so creative!
So I thought I would share it with you all. This is my mannequin head that I took for 2 years in a row. the first year was the bridal look. the second year was the butterfly. I did keep the veil the second year and just pulled it over her head. It took me so long to string those beads that I didn't have the heart to un-bead her. I also visited my high school many many years later and she still had my head on display. I drew the butterfly and my dad did the gibson girl. Although I am sure that would be obvious.

That art is GORGEOUS! Good idea to scan it in, too. ;)

THANK YOU for giving me a heads up about Blogger. HOW FRUSTRATING! I'm working on some graphics this morning, was pouring my energy into that. I might work some more on figuring out Typepad or something else... Grrr...

How beautiful and sentimental. I love going through old boxes of stuff. You never know what you've forgotten after having 3 or 4 chillins'...

Be sure to hold on to those. Your kids will appreciate having them someday.

Fond memories to go thru and go thru again and again... I have my Dad's brief case, and several years of daytimers. I love to go thru it

Wow. Just wow. I am entirely moved by this. I can read so much into your mimicry of your father's style, your pride in your illustration. I'm glad you hung onto it and that you chose to share it with all of us.
